Exercise is activity requiring physical effort carried out to sustain or improve health and fitness.

It is the act of making the body perform some activities. These activities include running, jumping, dancing, singing, walking, climbing, and so on.

Importance of Exercise.

  1. Exercise increases energy levels.
  2. Exercise helps to maintain a healthy weight.
  3. It improves brain function.
  4. It helps to breath well.
  5. Regular exercise helps to control blood glucose levels
  6. Exercise stimulates the appetite.
  7. It encourages sound sleep.
  8. It enhances immune system.

GUIDELINES FOR EXERCISING THE BODY.

  1. Speak to your doctor before beginning any new exercise programme
  2. Drink enough water in three hours prior to exercise because exercise increase the need for water.
  3. Start at level. Do not do more than your body ready for.
  4. Never use drugs for exercise
  5. Use correct materials and equipment for each exercise
  6. Avoid exercise immediately after meal.

TOPIC; GOOD POSTURE.

Posture is the position in which someone holds their body upright against gravity while standing, sitting or lying down. It is the way the body parts are held up or carried when walking, standing or sitting.

Below are some tips to help maintain a good posture.

Sitting properly; ensure that your feet are on the floor, or on a footrest rather than handing mid-way. Keep the knees at or below hip level, maintain relaxed shoulders with your forearms at a parallel position to the ground, and have your backrest support your entire back.

  • Standing properly; ensure that your weight is born by sole of your feet, with your feet placed 4-5 inches apart tuck your stomach in and have your hands hanging naturally from the body sides.
  • Preferable lying position; a major secret to sleeping right is having a good posture keeping the natural curves in your back lying with your  head on one pillow so that your spine is in am natural position .
  • Working properly; different kinds of work take of posture. The posture one takes while doing any kind of work must be such that protect someone from harm. Good working postures prevent bodily discomfort at work. It prevent  fatigues at work and work and conserve energy.

IMPOTANCE OF GOOD POSTURE

  1. Good posture and back support are essential for avoiding back and neck pain.
  2. Good posture also prevent muscle aches and muscle fatigue.
  3. It keeps bone and joint in proper aliment.
  4. It helps us to move fast and smartly.
  5. It enhances good looking and appearance.

NEGATIVE EFFECT OF POOR POSTURE.

Topic : Basic sewing processes.

Stitching is the process of passing threaded needle and thread in and out of a material to make a specific design.

Stitches are small lines of thread made on a press of cloth when it is being sewn. The design produced when performing stitching is made up of stitches.

TYPES OF STITCHES

There are broadly three types of stitches

  1. The temporary stitches.
  2. The permanent stitches.
  3. The decorative stitches.

Temporary stitches are used to hold two or more fabrics together temporarily, they are removed as soon as they are no longer needed . e g  tacking or basting , even, uneven, diagonal, tailor’s tacking e t c .

Permanent stitches are made permanently on the fabric and need not  be removed later like temporary stitches. E g running stitches, back stitches, run and back stitches, hemming stitches, whipping stitches etc.

Decorative stitches are used to decorate garments. The decoration should not weaken the decorated portion of the garment. E g stem stitches, chain stitches, herring-bone stitches, loop stitches, satin stitches French knots e t c.

  1. Mud floor; this is a traditional floor finish in Nigeria and Africa.

Advantages.

  1. It is cheap.
  2. It is cool, therefore suitable for hot weather.
  3. The raw material (mud) is readily available.

Disadvantages.

  1. It is not as strong as other floor finishes.
  2. It is not durable

It is not suitable for riverine areas.

2. Concrete floor ; it is made of a mixture of cement, sand, gravel and water.

Advantages.

  1. It is strong and hard wearing.
  2. It is durable and does not wear out easily .
  3. It is suitable for every area and every part of the home.
  4. It is easy to clean. It can be washed.
  5. It can be painted into different colours.

Disadvantages .

  1. It is more expensive than mud floor.
  2. It can be slippery

                              3. Wooden floor; good quality wood is needed for this floor finishing.

                              Advantages

  1. It can be cheaper than types of floor.
  2. It is warm to the feet
  3. It can be made to look attractive if well maintained.

                               Disadvantages .

Household waste or refuse is a health hazard if not properly dealt with.

METHODS OF WASTE DISPOSAL.

1. Refuse may be buried e g broken plates, cups, or old tins should not be kept lying about as they form breeding ground for germs and mosquitoes.

2. Refuse such as paper, rag etc should be burnt when dry.

3. Vegetables waste e g orange peel, egg shell, may be used to feed animals.

4. All vegetables can also be decomposed in order to be used as manure.

  2. Used pads should be properly disposed immediately by wrapping  it in an old news paper and throwing it into the dustbin or in a pit latrine if available.
  3. Bathing regularly at least twice a day during menstruation is important.

HEALTHY FEEDING AND EATING PRACTICE

Healthy eating habits is the act of observing good habit and eating manners.

A  healthy feeding practice is the act of choosing healthy food and nutrients from various food sources in order to ensure adequate and balanced meal.

Healthy feeding practice can be maintained in the following ways:

  1. Choosing food that are not contaminated.
  2. Feeding on plenty fruits and vegetables.
  3. Selecting food from rich sources. E.g . water, oli, protein. Etc.
  4. Avoid eating junk foods in between meals.

REST AND SLEEP

Rest means to relax or to do nothing after a period of activity in order to refresh the body and mind. Also, rest is when the individual is conscious of all that is happening around him.

Sleep is the natural state of rest in which the eyes are closed and the mind and the body are not active or conscious. During sleep, the individual is not aware of what is happening around him.

Importance of rest and sleep

  1. They help to replace the lost energy in the body.
  2. They help to build up energy for body.
  3. They aid quick recovery after illness.
