Sell reliance means relying on one’s ability both physically and mentally in order to make ends meet or survive in life.
CONSEQUENCES OF UNDISCOVERED TALENTS AND UNDEVELOPED SKILLS
a. HIGH CRIME RATE: Individuals who are not self reliant may likely take to crime once they are idle.
b. UNDERDEVELOPMENT: There will not be any meaningful development where talents and skills as re being wasted because such a couple try will lack human resources.
c. HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT RATE: As a result of wasted talents and skills, the rate of unemployment will be high because there are not enough job creators.
d. HIGH DEPENDENCY: Both the country and individuals will depend on others for survival where talents and skills are not discovered.
e. SLOW SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL GROWTH: It will slow down the socio-economic and political growth and development of individuals and the society.

TODAY’S TOPIC: CRIME PREVENTION
Crime prevention refers to efforts on the part of individuals, groups and government to reduce and if possible eradicate crime and criminal activities in the society.
WAYS OF PREVENTING CRIMES
i. Places that are known to be hide-outs of criminals should be well monitored and policed by security agents.
ii. There is a need for a good working relationship between neighborhood associations, local vigilante and relevant law enforcement agencies.
iii. Establishment of vocational training centres throughout the length and breadth of the country will also help keep youths busy and stay off crime.
iv. Relevant agencies such as the police force, N.D.L.E.A., I.C.P.C., E.F.C.C., Custom Services, Immigration and others must be well funded and exposed to regular training so that they can live up to expectation.
v. Parents must spend considerable time with their children at home and also give them moral training.
vi. Sales if alcohol, drugs and herbal gin must be banned in public places.
HOW TO AVOID CRIMINAL BEHAVIOUR
i. Avoid Negative Peer Influence: We must avoid keeping bad friends that may lure us into crime.
ii. Hard Work: An individual who is hard working will not have time for activities that are against the law.
iii. Religious Commitment: We must be committed to religious activities
iv. Discipline/ Self Control: A disciplined person will hate crime.
v. Patriotism: We can avoid criminal behavior by being patriotic to one’s country and not doing what will endanger the lives of others or tarnish the country’s image.

TOPIC: WAYS OF PROMOTING NATIONAL UNITY
.The duty of promoting national unity should not be left in the hands of government alone. Everyone including individuals, families, non- governmental organization and society in general must put in all efforts towards promoting national unity.
The following are ways to promote national unity:
a. Tolerance: We can promote national unity by overlooking our differences Tolerance leads to peaceful co- existence.
b. Hospitality: We must accommodate and be friendly with people from other ethnic groups in our midst so they feel secured and have a sense of belonging
c. Inter-marriage: When men and women from different ethnic backgrounds come together in marriage, they will learn each other’s tradition, culture and of course language which will in turn enhance national unity.
d. Non-discriminati on: Individuals and groups can promote national unity but not discriminating on the basis of tribe or religion.
e. Patriotism: We can promote national unity by supporting the government will of the day without ethnic sentiments.

CONSTITUTIONAL ELEMENTS THAT CAN PROMOTE NATIONAL UNITY
1.. Revenue Allocation Formula: This aspect of the constitution ensures an equitable sharing of the national revenue/ resources so that no ethnic group is neglected or marginalized.
- National symbols: National symbols are common heritage. It includes national currency, flag, national identity card etc.
- Federal character principle; This is the principle that has been entrenched in the constitution to ensure that all ethnic groups are represented in all facets of national life including employment and appointments into federal positions without any form of discrimination or marginalization.
- Fundamental Human Rights: All citizens are entitled to these rights without been biased or partial.
- Nigerian Motto: The Nigerian motto as stated in the constitution is ” Unity and faith, Peace and Progress”.

- Nigerian coat of arms: This is a special symbol that represents the unity, power and authority of Nigeria as an independent nation. It came into use on October 1st 1960 as a sign of independence of Nigeria from colonial masters.
Below are the features on the coat of arms and what they stand for
i. The two white horses: These represent the pride and dignity of Nigeria and it’s citizens.
ii. Red Eagle: The strength of Nigeria.
iii. The colorful flower base: It stands for beauty of Nigeria.
iv. Black shield: This stands for good and fertile soil of Nigeria.
v. Wavy Silver Band: The “Y” shaped wavy band represents the two major rivers in Nigeria, i.e. Rivers Niger and Benue.
vi. The country’s motto:” Unity and faith, peace and progress”
2. Nigerian constitution: The Nigerian constitution is a legal document containing rules and principles that specify how a country is to be governed. The constitution is an important national symbol which guide both the government and the citizens.
3. Nigerian currency: This is another important national symbol. It is the mode of payment for any transaction and its in form of Naira and Kobo . The Nigerian currency is circulated through the Central Bank.
4. National Identification card: This National symbol is a means of identification for Nigerians. It bears the name, occupation, address, height, state of origin of holder.
5. National flag: The Nigerian flag is a symbol of authority and independence status. It was designed by Mr. Taiwo Akinkunmi. The green color stands for abundant natural wealth, vegetation and farm lands of Nigeria while the white color stands for peace and unity.
TODAY’S TOPIC : PROMOTING NATIONAL UNITY
Meaning of national institutions
These are organizations established by the government by the government of a country for the purpose of servicing the needs of the citizens of the country.
The following are the initiatives taken to promote unity among the various ethnic groups in Nigeria
i. The National Youths Service Corps( NYSC): This institution was established in 1973 for the purpose of promoting national unity by enabling fresh graduates to serve in states other than the state of their origin in order to make graduates make contacts with people from other ethnic background to develop a national outlook and orientation . It was established by the then Military head of States, General Yakubu Gowon.
ii. Federal Character Commission: This is a commission designed to bring about equality for the purpose of equal representation of all ethnic groups or states in national institution
iii. Unity Schools: These are Federal Government Colleges established in all the six geo-political regions of the country. They are designed to provide opportunities for students to interact with members from ethnic background other than their own and forge lasting friendship.
iv. National Sport Festivals ( NSF): To promote unity, sport festivals are held regularly to bring together sport men and women from different ethnic and cultural background under one umbrella.
v. Then National Orientation Agency( NOA): This institution was established by the Nigerian government in 1978 by the military President, General Ibrahim Babangida. It was established to mobilize Nigerians for self reliance, economic recovery and to promote government policies and programmes.
vi. National Inter- religious Council( NIC): This body is set up by the government to promote tolerance, dialogue and peaceful co- existence among Nigerians irrespective of their religion.
vii. National Cultural Festivals: This is a body established to develop unity in our country.

- EXPLAIN FIVE CAUSES OF COMMON CRIMES
POVERTY: Some people get into serious crimes like human or drug trafficking, ritual killing to make money in an easy way in order to have a change of status.
UNEMPLOYMENT: Some unemployed people regard some criminal activities like armed robbery, drug trafficking as an opportunity with quick prosperity.
IGNORANCE: Some people do not know the consequences of committing a crime.
HARD DRUG: Use of hard drugs like marijuana, cocaine, Indian hemp etc. can lead users into crime.
ILLITERACY: Absence of formal education has brought about an increase in the crime rate in the society.
EXPOSURE TO FOREIGN VALUES: Nigerian youths are exposed to foreign values such as films etc. which are mainly violence based.
GREED: The excessive love of and for money by individual or group either youth or adult in a society has led a lot of people into crimes.
BAD PARENTING: The way a child is brought up by his/her parents or guardian determines the habit of that child in the society
GENERATIONAL: Crime is a common activity in some families and it is passed down from the parents to the children.
2. EXPLAIN FIVE EFFECTS OF COMMON CRIMES
- INSECURITY: This is the major effect of crimes in the society. Citizens feel insecure because of high crime rate.
- UNDERDEVELOPMENT: Investors would not establish business in a society where crime is the order of the day.
- POLITICAL INSTABILITY: Crime against citizens by government can lead to political instability and will cause citizens to behave in a politically unaccepted way; e.g. embezzlement of public funds.
- DESTRUCTION OF LIVES AND PROPERTIES: Crimes against humanity in the society can lead to the destruction of lives and properties, causing disorderliness and unrest.
- HIGH MORTALITY RATE: Crimes such as armed robbery, selling of fake drugs lead to death of citizens.
- TRAUMA: Victims are traumatized e.g. rape and armed robbery victims.
- POOR ECONOMY: Where crime rate is high, the economy situation is always affected. Businesses will shut down and unemployment will be on the increase.
- PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS: Crimes like drug abuse can lead citizens to psychological problem in which victims can become depressed.
