The Apostles were filled with courage and so they went into the streets of Jerusalem to preach God’s word.
The people that came for the feast of Pentecost began to hear their language spoken such as Parthians, Medes, Elamites, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, Phrygia, Pamphilia,Egypt, parts of Lybia including people from Rome, Crete and Arabia.

The Ascension Of Christ
The Great Commission (Matt 28:16-20, Mk 16:15-18)
Ascension refers to going high up to heaven. This happened after the Great Commission had been given to the Disciples.
Great Commission According to Matthew
As instructed by Jesus, the disciples went to Galilee to wait for him.They were gathered at the mountain which Jesus pointed out to them.
They patiently waited Jesus’ arrival. When he arrived, they worshipped him.
Jesus then gave them the Great Commission which involved preaching, teaching and baptism of the whole world.
Great Commission According To Matthew
As instructed by Jesus, the disciples went to Galilee to wait for him.They were gathered at the mountain which Jesus pointed out to them. They patiently awaited Jesus’ arrival and when he did, they worshipped Him.
Jesus then gave them the Great Commission which involved preaching, teaching and baptism of the whole world.
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the HolySpirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always to the close of the age.’
The Significance
The disciples were to carry on the work of Jesus. They would further train others by preaching and teaching them the will of God as revealed by Jesus.
All Christians have been given the mandate to fulfil the Great Commission.
Great Commission According To Mark
Here,we find those signs that will follow those who will obey the Great Commission.
“Go into the world and preach the gospel to whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
The following signs were mentioned will accompany the Great Commission
“And these signs shall accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons, they will speak in new tongues, they will pick up serpents and if they drink any deadly thing; it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover.”
The Significance
The disciples get to know what will happen if they obey.Thus, all Christians are to preach the gospel of salvation to mankind.

The Appearances Of Jesus After The Resurrection
The various appearances of Jesus are recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
Appearance in Matthew’s Gospel(Matt 28:16-20)
Jesus appeared to the women disciples and asked them to tell the male disciples that they should meet him by a mountain in Galilee.
The disciples went there and Jesus appeared to them at Galilee.
When they saw Jesus, they worshipped Him though some doubted.
Jesus then gave them the Great Commission.
Appearance in Mark’s Gospel(Mark 16:9-18)
Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene whom he sent to inform the others, though they did not believe her.
Jesus further appeared to two men going to the country side.These men went back to tell the other Apostles though they did not believe.
Jesus then appeared to the eleven disciples as they sat at the table. He rebuked them for not believing those who saw him. Jesus then gave them the Great Commission and the signs which will follow.
Those who believe the gospel and are baptized would be saved and those who don’t believe will be condemned.
These are the signs that will follow the disciples; they will cast out demons in His name, they will speak in new tongues, they will pick up serpents, if they drink anything deadly it will not hurt them, they will lay hands on the sick and they will be healed.
Apperance in Luke’s Gospel(Lk 24:1-49)
On the same day Jesus appeared to the women disciples, he also appeared to two other disciples who were on their way to Emmaus.These disciples were talking about the suffering and death of Jesus Christ.Jesus joined them while they spoke but they did not recognize him.
Jesus asked them what they were discussing.One of them, Cleopas; questioned if Jesus was not aware of the happenings in Jerusalem.
They told Jesus about the Messiah, his death and resurrection.Jesus told them that it was mandatory for the Messiah to die to enter into His glory.
On arrival at Emmaus, they persuaded Jesus to spend the night with them since he appeared to be going further.
As they sat to eat, Jesus took bread, blessed, broke and gave it to them. At that instance, their eyes became open and they recognized Jesus. Jesus vanished from their sight and the two men went to inform the disciples.
While the two men were still narrating their experience to the disciples, Jesus appeared to them.They were frightened but Jesus told them not to be troubled. He said it was Him in flesh and even ate some fish to proof so.He said the scriptures had to be fulfilled. He had resurrected and that they should wait for the power from on High.
Appearance in John’s Gospel(John 21:1-14)
Jesus revealed Himself to some of His disciples at the Sea of Tiberias but they did not recognize Him.
Peter told the others he was going to fish and they followed him.They toiled and caught nothing through the night.
As the day was breaking, Jesus asked them if they had caught anything but they replied in the negative.Jesus advised they cast their net on the right side and when they did,they had a great catch.
John told the others it was Jesus.On hearing this,Peter dressed quickly and ran to meet Jesus.
When they got to the land, Jesus asked them to come and eat with him. They were afraid to ask if He was the resurrected Christ.Jesus shared the fish and bread with them. He then revealed Himself to them.

The Burial of Jesus(Matt 27:57-61)
In the evening, a man called Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council , also a friend of Jesus went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body in order to bury it . Joseph took the body from the cross and wrapped him in a linen shroud. He laid the body in his personal tomb and covered the entrance with a stone.
The women disciples witnessed where Jesus was buried.
The Resurrection and Appearances Of Jesus
The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ (Matt 28:1-10, Mk 16:1-8,Lk 24:1-12
Resurrection means to bring back to life again after an individual has been declared dead.
The third day after the Burial of Jesus in the tomb,Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, Salome;the women disciples went to the tomb of Jesus. They carried spices which they wanted to use to annoint the body of Jesus and preserve it from decay.
When they arrived at the tomb, they discovered that the stone had been rolled away and wondered how it was removed.
At the entrance of the tomb, an angel was there who told them that Jesus had risen. He said to them;
‘Do not be amazed;you seek Jesus of Nazareth,who was crucified. He has risen,he is not here,see the place where they laid him.But go tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you in Galilee, there you will meet him,as he told you.’
The disciples ran to the tomb when they heard about the risen Christ. When they got there, they saw the linen shroud which was used to wrap him but not Jesus.
The Significance
Through the resurrection from the dead,Jesus conquered death. This shows Christ’s victory over death.This victory over death has given us eternal life.
Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus as Easter. This celebration takes place from the Sunday after Good Friday.
The monday after Easter is referred to as Easter Monday in which is celebrated as the time Jesus met his disciples in Galilee.
Christians celebrate this in form of picnic or merrymaking.

The Death and Burial Of Jesus
The Crucifixion (Matt 27:32-44)
After the trial of Jesus before Pilate, he was led by soldiers to the place of crucufixion. On their way, they met Simon of Cyrene whom they forced to help Jesus carry the heavy cross.
When they got to Golgotha(place of skull), Jesus was given wine mixed with gall to drink by the soldiers. This drink was meant to reduce the pain Christ might suffer after being nailed to the cross. As he tasted it, he didn’t drink it.
The soldiers crucified Jesus by laying him on the cross and nails were hammered into his hands and feet. Jesus suffered greatly as the nails were pierced into his flesh. They then shared his garments among themselves by casting lots. On the top of the cross, they put the charge for which Jesus had been crucified.
‘This is Jesus the King of the Jews’
Two robbers were also crucified with Jesus on both sides. The passersby mocked Jesus, telling him to save himself. Likewise, the Chief Priests, scribes and elders mocked Jesus that he could save others but could not save himself.One of the robbers also joined in the mockery .
The Significance
The suffering of Jesus shows that suffering is part of human life.For any man to get to his place of destiny, there will indeed be a time of suffering.Through Jesus suffering, he was glorified and brought salvation for mankind.
The Death Of Jesus (Matt 27:46-56)
There was darkness from the sixth hour to the ninth hour. Jesus cried out with a loud voice;’Eloi,Eloi,lamasabacthani’ meaning ‘My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me’. When some of the people heard this, they thought he was calling Elijah to save him. One of them ran,took a sponge and vinegar and put it on a reed to give Jesus to drink but others told him to leave him and see if Elijah would save him.Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
Immediately Jesus died on the cross, the curtain of the temple split into two. There was a great earthquake which shook everywhere and some of the tombs opened and the dead came back to life .They went into town and appeared to many people.
With all that happened, the soldiers confessed that Jesus was truly the son of God.The women disciples such as Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of James and John (sons of Zebedee) were at the Crucifixion.
The Significance
The death of Jesus gave us salvation which has given us victory over sin and we have received eternal life.

The Trial Of Jesus and The Denial by Peter (Matt 26:59-75, Mk 14:53-72, 15:1-15)
At the house of Caiaphas, false accusations were made against Jesus including that he said he will destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days. Jesus did not answer all the charges and when asked if he was the son of God, he agreed and the High Priest said Jesus ought to die for such blasphemy.The people spat on him and hit him.They covered his eyes and asked him to identify who struck him.
Peter was in the courtyard, watching all that was happening and when one of the maids of the HighPriest accused him twice of being with Jesus, he denied both.Later, a bystander accused Peter that he was a Galilean and was one of the Disciples. Immediately Peter denied the third time, the cock crowed the second time. Jesus looked at Peter and he remembered the words of Jesus about his denial. Peter felt sorry for disappointing Jesus, he went out and wept bitterly.
In the morning, they took Jesus to be tried by Pontius Pilate, the Roman Emperor . Pilate found Jesus innocent of all the charges and so did his best to save him. It was the custom to release a prisoner at the feast of Passover.Pilate asked who he should release between Jesus and Barabbas(a notorious criminal). The Chief Priests told the people to ask that Jesus be crucified and when asked what his offence was, they cried out the more;
‘Crucify him’
Pilate then released Barabbas and handed Jesus over for crucifixion.
Instances that can lead to a Christian’s denial of Christ and his/her neighbour
- When one fails to speak the truth for fear of punishment.
- Telling lies to escape punishment or gain favour.
- Cheating in exams so as not to fail.
- Swearing in God’s name and then proceeding to lies.
- Refusing to suffer persecution for the sake of Jesus.
- Failure to defend Christ when attacked by unbelievers.
Answer these questions

The Betrayal and Arrest Of Jesus Christ(Mark 14:43-52, Matt 26:47-56)
Jesus and the Disciples left for the Garden of Gethsemane from Mount Olives. On the way, Jesus told his disciples about his betrayal, arrest and death. He told them that they would run away but Peter promised to be with him to the end.
Jesus told Peter that;
“Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times”
At their arrival at Gethsemane, Jesus took Peter, James and John nearer to where he was praying and told them to watch with him. At Gethsemane, Jesus prayed that;
“If it is possible, let this cup pass over me, but not my will
but your will be done.”
Jesus came back and met his disciples sleeping, he then told them to watch and pray so as not to enter temptation. Jesus went back to pray and coming back, he met them asleep. He then went the third time to pray and coming back, he told them to rise up because the time had come for him to be betrayed.
Judas Iscariot who had collected a bribe of thirty shekels of silver from the High Priest, came with some soldiers to arrest Jesus. Judas has already told the soldiers that whoever he kisses is the one to be arrested. Thus, he kissed Jesus.
At the time of the arrest, Peter brought out his sword and cut off the ear of one of the soldiers named Malchus but Jesus rebuked him. All the disciples fled except Peter.
Jesus was thereby arrested and was taken to the house of Caiaphas,the HighPriest.
The Significance
- The cup which Jesus referred to represents his suffering and death.
- Jesus told his disciples to watch with him. Therefore, Jesus expects Christians to be watchful at all times
- Jesus scolded Peter for the act of violence. This shows that Christians should seek to resolve things amicably.
Answer these questions
- Who promised to be with Jesus to the end?
- What did Jesus ask his disciples to do?
- What was Jesus’ prayer in the garden?

The Last Supper (Matt 26:17-30)
Jesus celebrated the Passover feast as the Last Supper with His disciples in Jerusalem.
The Passover feast is a feast celebrated by the Jews because of their freedom from bondage in Egypt.
Jesus sent two of his disciples to go and prepare the Upper Room where they would have the last supper. He instructed the disciples to follow a man carrying a jar of water on his head. They were to bring the following items: unleavened bread (bread without yeast), bitter herbs, wine, a bowl of water and towel.
In the evening, as Jesus and His disciples were eating, He told them that one of them would betray him. Jesus further said it would have been better if that man had not been born. Judas asked, ‘Is it I? ‘and Jesus replied that ‘you have said so’.
While eating, Jesus took the bread and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them saying;
‘Take , eat, this is my body’
Then he took the cup and gave thanks and he gave it to them saying;
‘Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the New Covenant which is
poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’
Jesus told them that he would not drink of the wine again until they all drank it new in God’s Kingdom.
After the Supper, Jesus and his disciples sang a hymn and left for the Mount of Olives to spend the night there.
The Significance
- The Jews celebrated the Passover to represent the liberation of the Israelites from Egypt. Thus, Jesus gave the Passover a new meaning through the Last Supper. It now represents the spiritual freedom from sin.It signifies the death of Jesus on the cross.
- The bread represents the body of Jesus
- The wine represents the blood of Jesus
- The washing of the Disciple’s feet shows Jesus’ act of humility.
- The Last Supper is now celebrated by Christians as the Holy Communion or the Eucharist.

The Passion Of Jesus Christ
The Triumphant Entry ( Matt 21:1-11, Mk 11:1-11, Lk 19:28-44)
Jesus and his disciples travelled through Jericho and arrived at Bethphage, a village situated near Mount Olives. Jesus sent two of his disciples from Bethphage to Bethany to bring the colt of an ass which had never been driven.
Jesus told them that if anyone challenged them, they should say that the Lord has need of it.
When they brought it to Jesus, He rode on it and entered Jerusalem. A very large crowd spread their clothes and palm fronds on the road for Jesus thereby giving him a royal welcome.
The people shouted;
“Hosanna to the son of David!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of
the Lord !Hosanna in the highest!”
The people were happy as Jesus arrived in the temple that the Messiah had come so they thanked God.
Some of the Pharisees among the crowd asked Jesus to silence the disciples and the people from praising God. Jesus replied them; ‘ I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.’
The Significance
- Jesus showed the Jews and the world that He is the Messiah to come.

Love as the Supreme Law
Love is the special care or affection we devote to something or somebody. Jesus taught us that the greatest and most important law is the law of love.
Thus, the supreme law is LOVE. Jesus summaries the Ten Commandments into two categories. The first four commandments deal with our relationship with God. Jesus summaries it as this,
”You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul, and with all your strength
and with all your mind.’.
According to Jesus, this is first and greatest commandment.
While the second is this;
”You shall love your neighbiur as yourself”
Jesus emphasises the need for Christians to love one another.All the Law and Prophets depend on these two Commandments.
In 1Corinthians 13, Paul said Spiritual gifts are vain without love.So, Paul also admits that love is the greatest law.
The Qualities Of Love (Luk 2:51, I Cor 13)
- Love is patient
- Love is Kind

JESUS SUBJECTS HIMSELF TO THE CIVIL AND RELIGIOUS LAW (Matt 5:17-20)
Laws are given to control our behaviour. It therefore brings about peace and harmony. There are two types of laws
- Civil laws: These laws govern our relationship with one another.Example of this in the Bible are (I) mixing with sinners and outcasts (II) payment of tax to the Roman government.
- Religious Laws: These laws govern our relationship with God. They include the moral law of the Ten Commandments and Ceremonial laws like Payment of temple tax, Fasting, Prayer and Almsgiving.
Jesus attitude towards the civil and religious Laws(Matt 5:17-20)
Jesus had a positive attitude towards these laws. He said he did not come to destroy the law and the Prophets but to fulfil them.
Jesus paid tax(Matt 22:15-22)
The Roman government that ruled over the Jews imposed tax upon them which was used to provide social amenities. Thus, every citizen was expected to carry out this responsibility.
Jesus emphasises this when the Pharisees asked him if it was right to pay tax. Jesus replied by saying;
‘Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s
and to God, the things that are God’s’
Jesus obeys the religious laws (Mt 17:24-27)
Every male Jew above nineteen was required by the religious laws to pay the temple tax( which is half a shekel). This tax was used to maintain the Temple. When the collectors of the tax approached him, he asked Peter to go to the sea and take the money from the mouth of the fish that he would catch and pay for the two of them.
Answer these questions
- Differentiate between Civil and Religious laws.
- Mention two examples each of these laws
- Explain how Jesus obeyed these laws.
