He also spoke to a nearby fruit-seller, who he persuaded to act as a witness. However, when the magistrate asked who had swerved over the white line, the fruit-seller accused the second driver, who of course denied it. Whom should the magistrate hold responsible? He had to decide who to punish. Hello students,
Let”s start this class with the correction of the previous class.
Mziliki and Lobengula were each given a treaty to sign, and both signed it, though neither could read. When Piet Grobler and his brother brought the second treaty, Lobengula treated it very courteously, believing it was simply a copy of the first. They explained the gist of it to the members of the council, but failed to exp[lain either, knowing that they would be able to read it for themselves. The brothers made two other requests, but Lobengula did not grant any, because none was acceptable. At his trial, he told his fellow countrymen:
“I am no different from any one of you:. We love our land, and do not want it to be taken from us. So if we sign two different treaties believing them to be the same, we cannot be expected to honour both. Only the first is valid.”

Today’s Topic: Revision exercise on summary
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions on it.
The parent-Teacher Association in secondary School has its advantages and disadvantages.
It is a necessary association as it enables parents and teachers to team up in seeing that a child receives good education. It is a body the government can easily run to, to supplement its efforts in providing education for all, when the financial burden becomes too heavy to carry alone. Besides, principals benefit a lot from a well-established, co-operating Parent – Teacher Association (PTA). It assists the principal to achieve discipline in school, as it takes necessary steps to see that problems posed by both staff and students are promptly and expertly handled. For instance, it suggests measures to adopt to curb late – coming, advises its parent – members to procure needed textbooks for their children/wards and helps in curbing truancy.
Parents so involved see themselves as part and parcel of the school and are proud and eager to contribute their quota towards the progress of the school. They tax themselves to provide necessary amenities and infrastructures that are non-existent in the school or refurbish those in dilapidated forms, for effective teaching and learning to take place. It generally gives useful advice and constructive suggestions to the principal on how to move the school forward.
However, PTA can be a thorn in the flesh of principals, especially where the Chairman of PTA, or other influential executive members are over – ambitious, pessimistic, corrupt and troublesome. Such a Chairman and his cohorts may feel at par with the principal, blatantly refuse to recognize his authority, nor give him their co-operation. PTA fund would not be released when needed for worthwhile projects to be executed in schools. In addition, parents’ minds would be poisoned against such PTA expenditure. When at all a PTA project is approved, the principal will have a problem on his hands to see that a large chunk of the approved and fund does not end up in the private pockets of PTA officials.
PTA officials at times descend as low as mobilizing forces against the principal by painting him black and instigating teachers to write petitions go the Ministry of Education or the government, against him.
A Chairman, in collusion with his officers, at times demands for a PTA office to be located in the school, and on refusal, the principal becomes his number one enemy. The list of harm PTA can do to a school is endless.
However, since education is very expensive, it is worth it to involve PTA in the running of schools, but with close monitoring. A wise and diplomatic principal will know how to handle PTA in order to get the best out of it.
(a) In three sentences, one for each, give three advantages of a Parent – Teacher Association.
(b) In three sentences, one for each, state the disadvantages of a Parent – Teacher Association given in the passage.

Today’s Topic: Revision on Summary.
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions on it.
Many African states have taken measure in their bid to eradicate illiteracy, but efforts have been hampered by a population growth that is higher than the illiteracy rate.
The Algerian delegate said that despite liberalization of primary school education, illiteracy would remain at substantial levels if
population growth was not controlled.
There is also the fear that literacy campaigns in most African states receive only lip service from government functionaries,or are treated as a topic merely for political campaigns. For example, commitments to the
Universal Primary Education (UPE) programme were made at a more favorable economic
period of the nation’s life. The re-introduction of levies in schools in some States has led to a fall in the school population.
In addition,if teachers are not given sufficient incentives to attract
and retain their services, they will leave the profession.
Furthermore, though some educationists regard early childhood education as a priority, nursery
education in Nigeria is left in the hands of private people.
In Niger, that government,as in Nigeria, prefers to allocate funds to primary rather than to pre-school education.
Togo differs by stressing that, psychologically, children must be prepared for a smooth transition into primary education. Its education experts have enlisted UNESCO’s assistance in funding an inexpensive way to run pre-primary schools.
Conversely in Ghana, although nursery Schools are
privately run, the Ghanaian Ministry of Education has nursery School training centers within its ministry.
Nevertheless, there is the argument that trying to formalize education at too early an age, kills children’s initiatives.
It is also argued that children should be allowed to explore their environment and obtain new information in their
indigenous languages to prevent confusion.
Therefore,class one
programmes should be tailored with the
assumption that the
child has had no previous formal education.
(a)In three sentences, one for each, state three factors which limit the effectiveness of
literacy programmes.
(b) In a sentence, compare and contrast nursery education in Nigeria,
Togo and Ghana.
(c) State in two sentences why class one programmes should assume that pupils have previously had no formal education.

Good morning students, how are you doing? Thank God for another opportunity to reach you through this medium.
Today’s topic: Revision on Comprehension.
Read the following passage carefully and answer the question on it.
Read the following passage carefully and answer the question on it.
The success or failure of an organization depends largely on the head of such an organization. In any organization whether big or small
people have to work together. The achievement of the goals or objectives of the organization makes it mandatory for teams to be formed. The moment a team is formed there must be a head.
The head plays a very crucial role in helping the organization to realize it’s goals. It is the head that coordinates and harnesses the efforts of the team. His ability to harness the efforts of the team effectively and thus bring about the full realization of the objectives of the organization depends on his perception of himself . Does he see himself as a boss or a leader?
If the head sees himself as a boss, he would be a human hawk and his attitude to his team mates could best be summarized
in one word- terrorism. The boss applies all sorts of techniques and tactics to make his subordinates do what he wants. He may resort to harassment, bullying, intimidation and coercion of his subordinates, all in the name of performing his role.
Workers in such an organization are therefore always afraid of the boss and they dare not offer any advice or suggestion however useful or sound it may be. There is the general atmosphere of frustration among workers. Of course, a frustrated worker cannot give off his best. In the final analysis the organization suffers by not achieving most of the goals it set out to achieve.
On the other hand if the head perceives himself as a leader he treats his team members as human beings who deserve human
treatment and respect. He sees his subordinates as very important in the realization of the goals of the organization. He solicits for their support and cooperation. He is persuasive rather than coercive. He makes his team mates see the rationale behind every action he takes and thus carries them along. A leader thus makes for a high morale among the team members, high productive and the full realization of the objectives of the organization. There is little wonder then why some organizations
perform poorly while
some perform even well above expectations.
QUESTIONS
(a) Why is it necessary for people to work together in an organization?
(b) What is the function of the head in an organization?
(c) How can the head of an organization be a human hawk?
(d) What can happen in the end if the head behave as a boss?
(e) What will be the consequence for the
organization if the head sees himself as a leader?
(f) “Does he see himself as a boss or
leader?”What is the Literary device used in the above?
(g)”If the head sees himself as a boss….’
(I) What is the grammatical name given to the above expectation as used
in the passage?
(ii) What is its function?
(h) For each of the following words find
another word or phrase which means the same and which can replace it as it is used in the passenger:
(I) mandatory (ii) plays (iii) realize (iv)
offer (v) perceives
(vi) rationale

Our topic today is CONCORD
Concord is the agreement between the Subject and the verb in number and person. This agreement is that when ever the Subject is singular, the verb should be singular. When ever the subject is plural, the verb should also be plural.
Example
- Lola eats rice (singular Subject and singular verb).
- They eat rice (plural Subject and plural verb).
Some rules of Concord;
- When two or more items, (nouns or pronouns) are joined by AND as Subject, the verb should be plural.
E.g
i). Yemisi and Olu come to school early.
ii). His brother and I are friends. - When the two nouns joined together by AND refer to the same person or item, the verb will be singular.
E.g
i) Bread and butter is not a lazy man’s food
ii) My mother and my sponsor appreciates your contribution. - When singular nouns or pronouns are joined together by conjunction like: with, together, like, the verb will be singular.
E.g
i) The man with his son goes to the farm.
ii) Seun together with her boyfriend has been admitted at the University of Ibadan.
iii) James like John is smaller than Sunday. - When correlations, either……or, neither…..nor join together two nouns or pronouns of similar number and person, the verb will singular if the two items are singular and will be plural if they are plural. E.g
i) Either the teachers or the students are to attend the workshop.
ii) Neither the boy nor his counsel appears in court.
ASSIGNMENT

Today, we are looking at practice exercise on SUMMARY
Read the following carefully and answer the questions on it.
Every normal human being would want to put his or her feet up once in a while and relax, but, obviously, one cannot relax all the time. A little work does not kill. Rather, it keeps one active and mentally alert.
Some people think that the invention of robots is the best thing that ever happened to man. They are convince that the invention has saved the day because robots are ideal workers who work without complaining or getting tired. Robots never reveal company secrets for any reason — corruption, fame or blackmail.
The admirers of robots think that once a robot is programmed, it can do any piece of work with precision over a long period without slowing down, getting bored or even going on break or vacation. Robots can be made to perform any task. They do not grumble, protest or ask for ‘inducement allowance’, overtime, bonus or any of the motivations that human beings usually demand. They also work under conditions which human beings would not accept due to either incapability or attitude.
One good thing about the robot is that any of its damaged parts can be replaced for work to go on effectively. On the other hand, if a human being loses a vital part of the body, that part may not be replaced for work to go on as effectively as before
There is no doubt at all that the robot is useful but I strongly believe that the human being is more efficient than the robot in many ways. Human beings are sensitive, thinking beings who are flexible and can therefore control their actions. Thus, they can perform more functions than robots. Since human beings can think, discriminate and make value judgments, they can solve problems on the spur of the moment. The robot, on the other hand, cannot do this because what it has been programmed for is all that it is capable of doing. If a robot is wrongly programmed, it will continue to produce the wrong result until its programme is corrected.
The human being can take the initiative in many things. He can communicate or even call for assistance when need be, which the robot cannot do. The human being can be appealed to, to make some crucial changes; he can also learn from observing what goes on and modify what he is doing.
It is clear that even though robots are useful, they are deficient in many ways, and therefore cannot have an advantage over human beings. In crisis, the robot cannot face the challenge. It neither reacts not reflects.
The robot is designed and programmed by human beings. How then can the created be superior to the creator? Robots are created to assist human beings and relieve them of some of their burdens, not to take over completely from them.
(a) In three sentences, one for each, state why the admirers of robots think that robots are more efficient than human beings.
(b) In three sentences, one for each, state three advantages which the human being has over the robot.

Good morning students. I’m glad to have you on this platform. I hope you are having fun with the online classes. Please make good use of this opportunity as time waits for no one. Today, we shall be looking at adverbs.
ADVERBS
There are some words in our utterance which say something about the way an action is done or the time and place of the action or how often the action is done. For instance, in the example below:
(1) Kola drank the water quickly.
(2) I go to school always.
The words quickly and always give us information about the actions described in the statements. The word quickly tells us about the way Kola performed the drinking while always describes how often I go to school. Words which behave like quickly and always are called adverbs. There main function is to tell us about:
(a) how an action is performed.
(b) when and where the action takes place.
(c) how often the action is done.
In other words, the adverbs give us more information about the verbs in the statement. Thus, in a statement like: The baby cry here.
The word here is an adverb because it tells us about the place the cry took place. In some cases, the adverbs may even give us information about adjectives as well as other Adverbs. For example, the adverb extremely in the example:
The mattress was extremely hard, is providing information about the adjectives hard. It tells us how hard the mattress was.
In the example, we work very slowly.
The adverb very is telling us about the adverb slowly.
Example of adverbs in English are: badly, completely, easily, kindly, sadly, naturally, lightly.
ASSIGNMENT
Identify the word each of the adverbs modifies in each of the sentences below:
(1) We agreed entirely with the report.
(2) Our visit last month was completely fruitful.
(3) It has become fairly obvious that Kofi is dishonest.
(4) Wale embraced Lucy publicly.
(5) Let’s eat in the room down stairs.
(6) Ade recited his lines perfectly satisfactorily.
(7) Our visit last year was absolutely fruitless.
(8) Britain has terrifying unsatisfactory weather condition.
(9) Kunle has travelled abroad
(10) We prayed silently in the house.
Kindly answer the questions in the form below. Write out only your answers e.g

Hello students, good to have this second class with you. I hope you are all staying as safe as possible.
I hope you are practising your essays like I advised previously. Please do as it is important. Today, I would give you an exercise on summary. I know you would be grumbling by now as you always say it is difficult. But like I said, practice makes perfect. Therefore, here we go:
Topic: Summary
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions on it.
One Nigerian city, in addition to a number of smaller, private hospitals, has both a university teaching hospital and a government hospital. Outside both these hospitals, hordes of patients gather daily. They have not been recommended for admission by any doctor. They only know that they are I’ll or injured and have come in hope of care or cure; they are outpatients.
At the university hospital, it is necessary to be in attendance very early in the morning in order to be in a prominent position when the first sorting process takes place. Some people even arrive the night before, but it is not actually a matter of ‘first come, first served’, since a clearly stated admission policy is strictly followed. An explicit purpose of the general outpatient department of the university teaching hospital is: ‘ To provide the necessary patients for the consultant clinics and to shield these clinics from excessive numbers…’ The number and types of patients admitted to the general clinic each day are limited by the number which can be examined adequately by the medical staff and apart from the critically ill, by the numbers required by the consultant clinics for teaching purposes. In other words, the very sick, the very young and the medically interesting have the best chance of entry, with the promise of exhaustive clinical examination, tests and treatment.
Those who are disappointed at the hospital may make their way to the government hospital. There, a different system operates. There, all comers, however many, are seen by a doctor, though exceedingly briefly and treated, provided they turn up during civil service hours, i.e. between 8am and 4 pm. Any patient who requires admission outside those hours or at a weekend is unfortunate. For if he/ she obtains admission as ‘ emergency’, the scarcity of resident medical staff at the fact that laboratory technicians are only ‘ on call’ mean that speedy diagnosis and prompt treatment are unlikely.
Kindly answer the questions in the form given and indicate your subject.
Questions
( a) In four sentences, one for each, state the factors that affect outpatients treatment at the university hospital.
( b) Summarize in two sentences the reasons why an outpatient may receive unsatisfactory treatment at the government hospital.

Hello students, I do hope you are keeping safe during this challenging time. It is essential that you do as importantly, the end of the race which began six years ago has been delayed for I believe a short while.
It is therefore important that you use this extra time wisely. Do not relent and please remember all what you have learnt and practised over the last months.
I would have loved us to as usual, continue our practice on Essay writing as we have done previously. However, I have found it a bit challenging correcting[ringing] the work of a few that have sent essays to me via whatsapp but I have encouraged them as I will all of you to please continue with this very important exercise in your folders. God willing, when we meet again, if time permits, I will go through and correct them before you write the examinations.
I have and always will stress the importance essay writing carries in the overall marks for this subject. Therefore, constant practice is key. Not only in essay writing, but other areas as well. For instance, comprehension, summary, lexis and structure and orals. Please continue in this wise.
Permit me for taking up some of your time but I as always, feel the need to remind you of your seriousness in getting at least and I mean at least a distinction in this subject.
Remember, that paper two i.e, essay, comprehension and summary carry the bulk of the marks. I will do my best to give practice exercises on comprehension and summary and the others on this platform. But like I have said and will continue to say, practice makes perfect. You can complement this effort by practising more on your own with past questions.
Till we meet again, Good luck and God bless.
